As a general rule, updates are a great thing. However, I'd like to point out that there are updates that contain additional software that are NOT part of the updates. Watch for the prompts and always select the "Custom" or "Advanced" install option when available and UNCHECK the extra options such as Google Toolbar or Yahoo Toolbar unless you actually plan on installing these extras. They are not needed for the updates and can cause undesirable behavior on the computer. There are different types of updates also. The main thing is to watch the prompts.
- Microsoft has Windows updates (no extra software).
- Sun has java updates WITH extra software such as Google Toolbar so watch the prompts.
- Adobe Acrobat Reader and Writer have updates WITH additional software so watch the prompts.
- Symantec / Norton's have updates (no extra software)
- McAfee has updates (no extra software)
- Webroot Spysweeper has updates (WITH ASK TOOLBAR you must choose CUSTOM INSTALLATION rather than Typical)
